Topic: Inflows and outflows at large radius

Abstract/Description:

This paper will be lead by one of Julia’s students.

This paper will continue on from the Bryant+ SAMI misalignments paper, looking at misalignments of stellar and gas rotations and what that means for dynamical settling time and the galaxy morphologies. This will expand the SAMI work to deal with the galaxies that have multiple rotation systems in the one galaxy and those that are other disruptors to the rotation. They were ignored from the stats in the previous paper, but with Hector we can address these.
This work is currently forming the Honours thesis of Lachlan Stuart (mid-2024 to mid-2025). It is unclear if this will lead to a paper out of the honours work alone or if it will continue into a PhD (more likely the latter).

Status: under review by Science Committee

Needed data products:

The stellar and gas rotation maps.
Lachlan has now written code to fit the rotation p.a.’s and is optimising that for the cases with multiple dynamical components – it is complex and was never solved for SAMI, so is new. These will become team products when done.
He is using the preliminary stellar kinematics from Gabby’s work but will need the better stellar kins when available.
